Transformer Replacement

The electrical infrastructure at this campus was aging and in need of upgrade in order to assure reliability of electrical service and improve safety and energy efficiency. The primary electrical feeders and the primary switchgear were replaced in 2008, but the secondary distribution system and many of its components were over 30 years old and reaching the end of their service life.

To extend the service life of these systems and comply with current energy mandates, this project provided design for the following:
  • Removal of all obsolete power transformers and ancillary devices and replacement with new equipment.
  • Design of a new unit substation including medium voltage disconnect switches, transformers and low voltage switchgear lineup.
  • New secondary circuits were designed to utilize smart technology to allow metering and control to optimize energy use.
As part of the design documents it was also necessary to modify existing equipment pads, containment curbs, conduits and wiring. This project extended the service life of the system and equipment and met the current energy efficiency mandates.
